Creating Competitiveness for Exports in Mozambique

BUILDING CAPACITIES TO IMPROVE OVERALL EXPORT READINESS AND ACCESSING THE EUROPEAN UNION MARKET

The first series of webinars is entitled “Building Capabilities to Improve Overall Export Readiness and Accessing the EU Market”. The series comprised four sessions aimed at providing entrepreneurs with relevant information and tools to improve competitiveness, promote growth and enhance export readiness, with a focus on the EU market. All four series of sessions were co-organized with the project’s stakeholders and partners, including the Ministry of Industry’s National Directorate for Industry (DNI), the Institute for the Promotion of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (IPEME) and the Chamber of Commerce. An overview of the structure and content of the series is provided below:

Session I “From Business Development to Export Strategy”

The webinar explored common aspects related to exporting, such as export plans and export sales channels, and discussed the usual challenges in exporting, such as costs, prices, quality and certification. In consultation and close collaboration with the National Directorate of Industry, the project will hold further webinars addressing more specific export requirements tailored to the needs of the majority of Mozambican SMEs.

Session II The Business Model Canvas - Strategic Tool for Innovation, Business Growth and Exports co-organized by the National Directorate of Industry of the Ministry of Industry (DNI).

The event examined the Business Model Canvas, a simple but valuable tool to help companies visualize critical growth factors and mobilize ideas into action. The webinar aimed to enable participants to use the Business Model Canvas to:

  1. identify which value propositions are offered by their companies and through which channels.
organize and structure ideas for the internationalization of their companies.
  2. visually display how their organization creates, delivers and captures value.

Session III: “Cost principles and export pricing”

Operating costs are central to most strategic business decisions regarding export plans or redirecting competitive advantages. However, without accurate pricing of products and services, export decisions can be risky. This session covered various aspects of export pricing strategies, cost principles and cost control, which help SMEs visualize the strategic elements in formatting prices and final costs when exporting and determining the ultimate market price.

Session IV: “How to implement an export market analysis”, co-organized by the Mozambican Chamber of Commerce and the PROMOVE Trade Project

Export market analysis is essential for companies that intend to sell their products abroad. An export strategy must carefully consider the demand for your company’s products and review and evaluate the target market, segmentation and potential market channels. This webinar presented a three-step approach to guide the development of market analysis and discuss critical aspects of market research. In addition, it provided participants with existing market information tools and explored concrete examples of market analysis in the European Union market.
