On the morning of Tuesday, March 11, 2025, a crucial training session began in Maputo for Mozambican laboratories seeking alignment with international standards. The workshop on ISO 17025 and Uncertainty Calculation, held under the PROMOVE Comércio project, will run until March 14, 2025, bringing together experts in the field, laboratory technicians, and quality sector representatives.
This initiative is part of the ongoing efforts of PROMOVE Comércio, funded by the European Union and implemented by UNIDO, to strengthen quality infrastructure in Mozambique. With the increasing need for accredited laboratories and reliable calibration services, the training aims to enhance the technical skills of participants and ensure that laboratories operate according to international requirements.
Why is ISO 17025 Essential?
ISO 17025 establishes requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories, serving as a global benchmark for quality. Its application allows laboratories to ensure precision and reliability in results, a crucial factor for the competitiveness of Mozambican products in international markets.
Consultant Cristina Antão, a specialist in the field, leads the sessions with a practical and interactive approach. The program includes topics such as:
✅ Principles and requirements of ISO 17025
✅ Impartiality, confidentiality, and metrological traceability
✅ Uncertainty calculation in laboratory measurements
✅ Application of ISO 19036:2019 in food and water microbiology
✅ Relacre Guide 31 and EURACHEM Guide for Uncertainty Quantification
The Training and Its Impact on Quality Infrastructure
This event represents another step forward in PROMOVE Comércio’s strategy, which has been investing in quality and compliance strengthening in Mozambique since its inception. The program has already boosted laboratory capacity building, providing metrology equipment, training, and technical support for ISO 17025 accreditation in laboratories across the provinces of Maputo, Nampula, and Zambézia.
The workshop also aligns with the efforts of the National Institute for Standardization and Quality (INNOQ, IP), a strategic partner of the project, which has been working to expand certification and ensure measurement traceability in the country.
Participation and Future Prospects
The training brings together professionals from various sectors, including laboratory technicians, representatives of metrology institutions, and certification specialists. In addition to theoretical sessions, participants will engage in practical activities, applying the concepts learned to real-world laboratory settings.
The expectation is that this capacity-building initiative will enable more Mozambican laboratories to achieve international accreditation, increasing the reliability of their services and strengthening the country’s position in the global market.
