Strengthening Fisheries Through Certification
Mozambique’s fisheries sector plays a crucial role in the country’s economy, providing livelihoods for thousands of people and contributing significantly to exports. However, accessing international markets requires adherence to strict quality and safety standards. Thanks to the Promove Comércio project, funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by UNIDO, fisheries in Mozambique are now better equipped to meet these standards, ensuring improved product quality, increased market access, and sustainable growth.
Bridging the Gap with Certification Services
One of the key interventions under Promove Comércio has been the enhancement of quality infrastructure services, particularly in certification and testing for fish and seafood products. Through strategic investments and capacity-building initiatives, the project has worked with the Instituto Nacional de Normalização e Qualidade (INNOQ, IP) and other stakeholders to:
✅ Improve food safety certification processes in compliance with international requirements such as ISO 22000 and HACCP.
✅ Strengthen testing and inspection laboratories to support quality assurance in fisheries exports.
✅ Train SMEs and fisheries cooperatives on export readiness, food hygiene, and product handling.
Impact on Fisheries and Exporters
With these improvements, Mozambican fishery exporters and small-scale fishermen now have greater opportunities to compete in global markets, particularly in Europe, where strict food safety regulations apply. The project has:
🔹 Reduced certification costs for small and medium-sized fisheries businesses.
🔹 Increased the number of accredited local testing facilities, reducing dependency on international certification bodies.
🔹 Enhanced awareness among fisheries operators on the importance of compliance with global standards.
A Sustainable Future for Mozambique’s Fisheries
By fostering a robust quality infrastructure, Promove Comércio is not only helping fisheries expand their market reach but also ensuring sustainable fisheries management through better handling, processing, and export compliance. These advancements position Mozambique as a reliable source of high-quality seafood, boosting both economic resilience and global competitiveness.
